We were briefed to create an exciting video for University of Southampton Students’ Union (SUSU) to be launched across marketing channels on A-level results day – giving future SUSU members a taster of what to expect.
The University of Southampton Students’ Union, branded as SUSU is the students’ union at the University of Southampton. The Union represents the students at the University council as well as providing support and social activities. Its main facilities are based on the main Highfield Campus, but the union also operates a presence at the Winchester School of Art and helps student societies and groups at the other campuses of the University.
All students who join the University become members of the union automatically unless they specifically request to opt out.
We were briefed to create an exciting video to be launched across their marketing channels on A level results day to give their future members a taster of what to expect from the Union.
In the previous year, we had created a video with the same purpose which went down well, so we had a challenge to improve on the results which we were of course full up to, we love a challenge!
After initial conceptual discussions with the marketing team, we put together the storyboard and shot list. The concept was based on utilising clever transitions to link scenes together and showcase the huge variety of events and things to do with emphasise on the fact there is something for everyone’s taste on offer. Once we had decided on the events and activities to go in the video, we put together the timetable and started with the production of the ambitious project.
A fast paced and dynamic video which required precision planning.
The production was filmed over a number of months, at various events on campus. For the large majority of them we were already due to film for separate videos in order to make the project more cost effective. We found the right moments and filmed the black to black transition in certain places at each event, meaning they could all link together in the edit. We then shot the final scenes over half a day with one specific student helping us with the initial wow factor transition, meaning both him and our camera operator with a Gopro action camera got rather wet as you can see.
It was all worth it though as the video has been one of their most popular videos to date, reaching over eight thousand views on Facebook alone. The video not only helped the Union connect with their future members but also acted as a sales tool with an end slide notifying them of details about their master pass ticket announcement the following day. It’s always rewarding to see the video content we produce having multiple benefits and yielding great results for our clients.
